Who Are We?

The Space Coast Marine Institute (SCMI) is a six to nine month moderate-security residential facility for boys ages 14-18 who have committed crimes. They have committed an average of 4-12 offenses by the time they are referred to SCMI by the Department of Juvenile Justice. These young men arrive at our institute with little or no self-esteem and have experienced minimal positive interaction with adults and peers.

"The teachers really spend alot of time with you, everyone here really cares."  -Brian, 17

"My favorite part of the program, believe it or not, is school. I came in at a 9th grade level and in four months I have earned an 11th grade level. The teachers really spend alot of time with you, everyone here really cares." – Brian, 17

The mission of SCMI is to address the needs of youthful offenders by providing a scheduled curriculum of academic, vocational and mental health awareness activities. In addition to a personalized academic education, the daily schedule includes programs that build self-confidence and a greater understanding of the world around us.

"When I got here, I didn’t have any relationship with my mother, now we are like best friends." – James, 17

A Second Chance at Life

Although the residents are "sentenced" to SCMI, our focus is on personal growth, not incarceration. During the six to nine month stay, a student will advance an average of 2.5 grade levels. Each student will participate in programs that teach accountability, dedication and teamwork. We continue to successfully help young men rejoin society as responsible and respectful students, employees and family members.

Over 1000 boys have participated in the program at SCMI, and approximately 70% have had no further negative contact with the criminal justice system. Compare that to the national average of 24% and see why we are so committed to these young men.

"Before I came here, I used to skip school. I didn’t think I had any options. Now I’ve earned my GED and I’m registered for community college. I’m going to be an electrical engineer." – Dickens, 18

A service of the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice and the Brevard County School Board, we are a 501(c)3 non-profit and we rely heavily on community support. Without it, we would not be able to continue with our mission of Keeping Kids Afloat .
